Organ Voicing Temporarily Delayed

Picture
The organ voicing crew’s arrival on January 4th has been delayed. The increase in COVID cases in the Los Angeles area from where they will depart has made the virus tests difficult to obtain. They will be unable to get a pre-travel tests for at least two weeks. Morris Wise is in contact with the Rosales Workshop and will let us know as soon as we have a new date for their arrival.

Many thanks to everyone has who provided meals for the organ crew in the past, and signed up to provide meals for the next crew. The “Feed the Crew” sign up form has been taken down until we know when the crew will be able to come for next steps in completing the organ.

A MESSAGE FROM THE NATIONAL CHURCH [Updated: 5/27/2020]

A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDING BISHOP CURRY:

Presiding Bishop joins call for national day of mourning on June 1, invites Episcopalians to honor COVID-19 victims this weekend

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry has joined other faith leaders in calling for a national day of mourning and lament on June 1 as the United States exceeds 100,000 documented deaths from COVID-19, and he invites Episcopalians to commemorate the victims during worship services this weekend.

“I encourage Episcopalians to join with other people of faith this weekend to grieve and honor those who have died from COVID-19,” Curry said in a press release. “Let this tragic moment not pass without us honoring the many among us who have lost their lives or lost their loved ones and commending them and ourselves to God’s love and peace.”

A MESSAGE FROM THE HAWAII DIOCESE [UPDATED: 9/21/20]

A MESSAGE FROM BISHOP ROBERT FITZPATRICK

The Diocese of Hawaii will respect the decisions of the individual churches as they decide how to conduct their worship services in some form.

The Bishop asks each church to prayerfully consider State and County rules, CDC guidelines, and communal considerations as they make this decision.

UPDATE AS OF 9/17/20:

As we continue in this time of the COVID-19 Pandemic, our common life as God’s people has been deeply impacted.  It seems likely to me that the “stay at home” order in Honolulu County will soon be lifted or significantly modified (by September 23rd).  The other Counties have not been under the same restrictions.  Assuming the “stay at home” order is lifted or modified (by September 23rd), I assume the Diocesan Support Center offices will officially be open beginning on Tuesday, September 29th.  Some individuals in the office may decide to return to the office as soon as the order is lifted rather than work from home.  In specific instances, individuals may continue to work from home, but most members of the staff will return to the office as soon after the order is lifted.

Regarding in-person public worship, all churches in Honolulu County may return to such worship as soon as the “stay at home” order is lifted or modified (after September 23rd).  The "Customary in the time of Pandemic" and the CDC Guidelines need to be closely followed.  Ideally, worship will be outdoors.  In-person public worship continues to be authorized in other Counties.

We must take seriously the need for safe in-person public worship as we continue to offer online worship and formation opportunities.  I will continue to support the Clergy-in-Charge (and the Senior/Bishop’s Warden in congregations without a Clergy-in-Charge) in local decisions about in-person public worship. Local community conditions and the makeup of congregations are different. I am most cognizant of the hope of many of God’s people to provide safe in-person public worship.

We must, however, continue to be aware that this Pandemic is going to be with us for some time to come. Dr. Robert Redfield of the Center for Disease Control told the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies that a potential coronavirus vaccine, which will likely be available in limited quantities by the end of this year, may only have an immunogenicity of 70%.  Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said in August that scientists are hoping for a vaccine that is at least 75% effective. The Food and Drug Administration said it would authorize a coronavirus vaccine so long as it is safe and at least 50% effective. Even with the widespread distribution of an effective vaccine, Dr. Redfield has stated that it will take “six to nine” months to get every American vaccinated and that the U.S. should have enough doses to return to “regular life” by the third quarter of 2021.

As the leaders of congregations, we need to be aware and responsive to the desire of God’s people for safe in-person public worship, and for virtual worship and formation opportunities. We human beings are social animals and we need one another.  As far as reports and comments from the Mayors, there appear to have been no COVID-19 outbreaks tied to church worship in “traditional” sanctuaries.  Locally, all COVID-19 hotspots related to religious communities were tied to house churches and/or home-based study groups that were not practicing safety precautions (mask wearing, social distancing, sanitizing, etc.).  We can safely worship. We must also be able to respond to changing circumstances.

I am keenly aware that the Pandemic is a heavy burden physically, emotionally and spiritually.  Please contact me with questions or concerns.  Please know you are in my prayers and on my mind every day!

God of compassion,
be close to those who are ill, afraid or in isolation,
and to those who have lost jobs or are anxious.
In their loneliness, be their consolation;
in their anxiety, be their hope;
in their darkness, be their light;
through him who suffered alone on the cross,
but reigns with you in glory,
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Your faithfully,
Bob+

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRIEST [UPDATED: 6/5/20]

A MESSAGE FROM KAHU KAWIKA

Picture
"...Though our church building may be “closed” temporarily, we as God’s ‘Ohana are never out of business. In terms of worship together, we are working with St. Michael’s and All Angels in Lihue and soon also with Christ Memorial in Kilauea to record morning worship together... [We] at All Saints’ are thinking of ways to gather outside of the sanctuary building for worship as well."

[Update 6/5/20]

Aloha mai kakou,

I tremendously look forward to the opportunity for us to commence in-person worship again this Sunday at All Saints'! I have enjoyed filming the recorded Morning Prayer services in cooperation with Fr. Andrew McMullen and the crew from St. Michael & All Angels, and have found it God's blessing that our two parishes could work together in such a meaningful way. This has been indeed a special time and season, and now we are about to enter into a new one of transition.

To that end, the vestry and I want to make sure that we do so in a way that transitions with intention and care for the physical, social, and spiritual well-being of our 'Ohana. Therefore, we will follow the guidelines below:

  1. We will still have both services (8am and 9:30am), but with social distancing and face masks. Households and couples can sit together, though, without social distancing.
  2. We thought at first that we would conduct the services outside near the deck, but instead we decided to hold them in the Sanctuary. There is room enough for everyone at 8am, and we will have the side lanai doors open with lawn chairs our for 9:30am with the addition of the big tent over that area (Rain is predicted this Sunday, plus logistically it is much easier than to set everything up outdoors). I would ask all those coming to the 9:30am service to pack some lawn chairs in your car in case you might need them to sit on the side lanai.
  3. Hank will continue to bless us with leading us in music ministry; however, in accordance with diocesan guidelines, for the time being we will have no in-person choral or congregational singing. We will have instrumental music, and the likelihood of more Virtual Choir musical offerings.
  4. We will have Holy Communion in a few weeks after we receive some special orders from the Mainland. In the meantime in our first few weeks together, we will have the "Liturgy of the Word," that is, the first portion of our normal service but without the latter Communion element.
  5. In addition, our Healing Ministry leaders are also planning on still offering prayer support - more instructions about that on Sunday.
  6. Finally, we will have a modified "Aloha Hour" after the 9:30am service -- no pupu's, but beverages like coffee, juice, and water in disposable cups.

These are all steps toward returning to the full in-person style of worship we love as statewide and nationwide virus testing becomes more robust and, eventually, a vaccine is developed. While the above measures are by no means perfect, I would invite us nevertheless to find God's moments of blessing in the midst of them. I am reminded of Moses and the Israelites, who escaped Egyptian slavery only to have to wander about in the desert for 40 years before "coming home" to the Promised Land -- the trick was to find God in the midst of their sojourns rather than wanting to go back to their former lives. While we are also sojourning through this wilderness experience, let's also look for "God-moments" and find ways to love and serve each other and our community in new and creative ways.

Much mahalo for your steadfast prayers, service, and support,
Kahu Kawika+
