THE CHURCH & CAMPUS
The Church
The church building was designed by Honolulu architect Guy N. Rothwell, who also designed the Gym (orignally also used as the Parish Hall) and Memorial Church School Building. It was completed on December 6, 1925, and contains many items of historical interest. The building utilizes the native lava rock stone in its structure, and features magnificent stained glass windows. The All Saints' Church building contains many items of historical interest:
The Stained Glass Windows
The Gethsemane Window - Located above the altar, this beautiful stained glass was dedicated on September 8, 1927, and is inscribed “In memoriam Josephine Wundenberg King, 1848 – 1925”. It was a gift of Mrs. Charles A. Rice. It was badly damaged by Hurricane Iniki on September 11, 1992, and was lovingly restored by Vance T. Wood of Stained Glass Art in California, in an on-site workshop put up in the Memorial Hall. It was re-dedicated on February 14, 1993. Mrs. King’s great -grandson Holbrook Goodale and members of his family who so generously contributed to the restoration were in church for the re-dedication. The Gethsemane window is featured in the slide show on the home page.
The Victory Window - The Victory Window is located above the door and was designed by the Zettler Studios in New York City. It was dedicated in April 1946, to all who made such great sacrifices for final victory in World War II, and to all the servicement of the Honor Roll. It depicts an almost life-size figure of Christ with pierced hands and feet, clothed in shades of red, standing victoriously on a globe showing the Western Hemisphere including theHawaiian Islands. The background is in beautiful shades of blue. The Victory Window is featured in the slide show on the home page.
Mary and the Baby Jesus & The Boy Jesus in the Temple - These two stained glass windows are situated across each other in the sanctuary. Both windows were designed, executed and installed under the direction of Mr. Henry L. Willet of the Willet Stained Glass Studios of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mary and the Baby Jesus is inscibed "In loving memory Grace King Rice, 1880 - 1940" and The Boy Jesus in the Temple is inscribed "In loving memory Mary Josephine King Forster, 1873 - 1940". The dedication service was held on Sunday, August 27, 1972, lead by the then Rector, The Ven. Richard S. O. Chang, who later became Bishop of Hawai'i.
The Austin Pipe Organ
In 1925, Mrs. S. W. Wilcox generously donated an Austin Pipe Organ to Kauai’s first Episcopal mission, All Saints’ in Kapaa. It was the first pipe organ on Kauai. Ninety years later, the historic instrument is still Kauai’s only true pipe organ. The pipe organ is a unique feature of All Saints’ Church and an integral and popular part of the Church’s worship services and community music outreach program. Unfortunately, age and the tropical environment took their toll on original instrument. The pipe organ’s various wood, metal, and leather parts were deteriorating. Routine maintenance and minor repairs were unable to stop the inevitable finale of the pipe organ’s lifespan. The organ was decommissioned on February 7, 2016, and a 5-year reconsutrction project kicked off, in an effort to continue the Wilcox family legacy and the spirit of fellowship through music with a brand new organ. In 2021, the newly rebuilt organ was blessed by Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick. To read more about the Reconstruction, click HERE. |
The Honor Roll
This brass plaque is mounted in the back of the church under the Victory Window, and contains the names of the men who served in the armed forces in World War II from All Saints' Church. A total of 76 names are on the plaque, six of which gave their lives, and 70 who returned home. The Honor Roll was ordered in 1948 from the International Bronze Tablet Company of New York City. |
The Campus
THE RECTORY - The Rectory was actually the first building completed on the property in June 1925, and became the home of the Rev. and Mrs. Henry Willey, first Vicar of All Saints' Church. The much beloved Willey’s welcomed many groups into their home for meetings, dinners and friendly gatherings. During the war Mr. and Mrs. Willey hosted after church luncheons for servicemen stationed on Kaua'i to make them feel they had a home away from home. The Vestry and the Women’s Guild met regularly at the Rectory in years past.

MEMORIAL SCHOOL BUILDING - This building was formally dedicated on November 12, 1939, and was used for the church school service, providing a place for three of the seven church school classes held Sunday mornings. Confirmation classes, young peoples’ forums, lectures, and meetings of various sorts were also held here. Although it was often referred to as “the chapel” for short, it was not formally consecrated until 2021 to temporarily host church services during the sanctuary's renovation. Now referred to as Memorial Hall, it is used for meetings and houses the Sunday school and nursery. The tower is a memorial to David K. Hayselden, who served on the vestry for many years. It houses the church bell which is rung each Sunday.
The Founders’ Porch that leads into the building is divided into three bays. The central bay is dedicated to Her Majesty, Queen Emma of Hawaii, “through whose instrumentality the Anglican Church was brought to the Islands,” and is the gift of the 'Iolani Guild of St. Andrew’s Cathedral. The right bay commemorates Capt. James Makee, founder of the industrial life of the Kawaihau District. Capt. Makee began the cultivation of cane and the manufacture of sugar in the Kapa'a area. His granddaughter, Wilhelmina Tenney of Honolulu, gave this bay. The left bay is a thank offering for “the loving service rendered to the people of Kauai” by the Rev. Marcos E. Carver, the first resident Episcopal priest on Kauai in the early 20th century who labored here from 1917 to 1925. It is the gift of several of his Kaua'i friends. |
THE ALL SAINTS' GYM - The gym was built in 1929 and has served All Saints’ Church and the community in many ways. Over the years it has served as a Parish Hall complete with a kitchen serving church dinners for up to 300 guests, a theater for shows and pageants, Sunday school classrooms, a Christian Store, an International school, a meeting place for community welfare programs and dances. An annual free Thanksgiving luncheon has been held in the gym in recent years, serving over 500 delicious turkey meals each year. The gym also houses the Ke Akua Youth Group meeting room, Choir Room, and Sea Scouts meeting room.
As a gym, it hosts a variety of sports including basketball, volleyball, dodgeball, and karate. The gym has also been rented for different classes and events such as aerobics, hula, ballet, zumba, and conferences. |
THE HENRY WILLEY MEMORIAL COLUMBARIUM & GRAVEYARD - This Columbarium was dedicated Thanksgiving Day 1958, to be used as the final resting place for urns containing the ashes of Henry Alpheus Willey (December 21, 1887 – January 4, 1958), his beloved wife Juelle J. (1888 – 1965), and our many other loved ones. The use of the property on which the Columbarium and cemetery are located was acquired in 1955 by means of a trade with Lihue Plantation for the church’s Wailua Cemetery property. The new cemetery was dedicated on Memorial Day 1955, when the move of the remains from the Wailua cemetery was completed. Then in 1973 the church received a gift from the H. D. Sloggett Memorial trust of the half-acre of land on which the cemetery and Columbarium are situated.

THE SLOGGETT CENTER & ALL SAINTS' PRESCHOOL - The Sloggett Center building was dedicated in February 1980. Its four wings around a central courtyard houses the Church office, kitchen, large meeting room and the classrooms and restrooms for All Saints’ Preschool. All Saints’ Preschool was originally started in 1966 as a preschool for church members’ children only. It was located in the All Saints' Gym building with a staff of two. A few years later it expanded to include children from the community, using the Memorial Hall building. Today, it is housed entirely in the Sloggett Center with a capacity of 56 students and a staff of 13. It serves as a day school for children ages three to five years, and is licensed by the State of Hawai'i. Visit the All Saints' Preschool website HERE.
