Helping Haiti

In April 2012, church members Mary Margaret Smith and Janet Wilson embarked on a trip to Haiti.  Their mission was to establish a relationship with a school there that they and All Saints' could continue to support when they returned to the islands.  Their vision stemmed from the urgent need for help in a country that was devastated by an earthquake in 2010.  Through a Hope for Haiti dance, grants, and the support of church members, they were able to raise funds that helped provide supplies and other items for their trip.  The following article was written by Janet Wilson, and the photos in the accompaying slideshow were also provided by her.

Hope for Haiti by Janet Wilson

The mission trip we took to Haiti in April was amazing, however the spiritual journey for me started well before we left Kaua'i. Planning the "Hope for Haiti" dance and talking with friends, I was able to articulate and share why we were going to Haiti. It was heartwarming to hear the experiences of others with their mission trips and how it transformed their lives. As All Saints is aware, there were a lot of questions as to why we would go so far and what we were going to do there. Mary and I wanted to find a school and/or church that we connected with and felt we could develop a lasting bond. A partnership between All Saints and Haiti.

Mary and I were met by Pere (Father) Ajax and his assistant, Angela Galbreath in Port au Prince. They assist different organizations/people that want to help Haiti in developing partnerships that meets the goals/mission of the trip. We traveled to Les Cayes which is south and west of Port au Prince and were connected with Fr. Colbert. He is responsible for several churches and stations (the name given when there is not a physical church for worship). We stayed at his Rectory with his family and were treated as if we were part of their family. This definitely allowed us to experience first hand what it is like to live there, including the loving hospitality of the Haitian people. Even with the most meager resources we were fed very well and given a place to sleep and feel safe. We also got to experience what Haitians do on a regular basis - sporadic water and electricity issues. Power outages were a daily occurrence.

I cannot say I was shocked by much that we saw and experienced but then again I was expecting dire conditions from the beginning. It is unfortunate that people have to use the same stream of water for bathing, washing their clothes, washing their vehicles and for drinking and who knows what else.

We were blessed to attend two Church services and meet with their leaders. The first was Station Sainte Croix in Jeremie and the second was Station Sainte Marie Madeleine in BonBon. Both of these churches/stations worship basically under a "lean to" with dirt floors, sheets for walls and a metal roof. We were given a very special welcome with signs and decorations and I felt quite honored to be there. The people were dressed in their Sunday best and I was impressed with not only the service (which of course we couldn't understand as they speak French/Creole) but also special songs and dances! Thankfully Angela was able to help translate and explain what was taking place! Mary and I passed out the Chaplets to the adults and bags with various goodies to the children. Station Sainte Croix is in need of a new space to worship so we would like to assist them with finding a new place. We also would like to help Sainte Marie Madeleine as they do not have a school for their children. Of course our resources can only go so far. But as Fr. Ajax and Angela advised, partnerships should start small and grow as we learn.

Fr. Colbert has a school associated with his church and rectory, Ecole Saint Sauveur Des Cayes. Mary and I were given a tour of the school and were quite impressed with how well behaved the students were. There were several classrooms, each grade with their own uniforms. We caused quite a stir with taking pictures as the students rushed to the classroom door in order to get a look at the pictures. We later went to visit a school in Camp Perrin, 30 minutes outside Les Cayes. When Mary had asked Fr. Colbert what we could bring with us, he had asked for supplies for this school. We went room by room and delivered white boards with markers and took pictures, and Fr. Colbert explained who we were and why we were there! We also gave books and puzzles to Saint Sauveur School.

Our last night was spent in Port au Prince and the drive from Les Cayes to Port au Prince was most eye opening and sad. The recent rains had caused many mud slides and everywhere you looked, there was a mess. So many people are still homeless and living in tent cities, that is seems overwhelming. Haiti needs a lot of help in many ways, but the people are so humble, loving, spiritual and grateful for what they have. I hope that All Saints can help make a difference in their lives and in the process, ours.

The Episcopal Church Women (ECW) of All Saints’ are the “helping hands” of the church, always there to support the different ministries and programs. They are involved in a number of community service organizations such as the Kauai Economic Opportunity Assistance Programs (KEO) to help feed the homeless and provide Easter baskets and Christmas gifts to the children. They volunteer at the annual Easter Seals Gingerbread event, support the American Cancer Society Relay for Life events and help raise funds for a free Thanksgiving Luncheon for the community.

'Aha Mele Benefit Concert Series

All Saints' is the home to Kauai's only remaining "true" pipe organ. This pipe organ is a unique feature of All Saints' Church and an integral and popular part of our worship. Unfortunately age and the environment have taken their toll on the wood, metal and leather parts of the mechanism with the result that minor repairs are becoming a routine necessity and maintenance costs are rising. Many of the repairs have been "stop gap" measures which enable us to continue to use the organ but do not resolve the underlying major problems. Now it is in great need of rebuilding and updating.

'Aha Mele, a benefit concert series, is a fundraising effort to raise the nearly $150K needed for the reconstruction of the organ and replacement of the console. The concerts will feature local and special guest musicians who have agreed to dedicate their time and talent towards this effort.

The goal of this organ project is to preserve and build upon the musical legacy of its original benefactor, Mrs. S. W. Wilcox. We hope to enhance our music program that will not only provide a venue for concerts in the community, but to raise awareness and encourage the talents of future organists for generations to come through a program of internships for visiting students.

"Heavenly Hikes" is a ministry of All Saints' Episcopal Church in Kapa'a, Hawaii (Kauai). The goal of "Heavenly Hikes" is to foster fellowship, to support healthy bodies, minds, and spirits, and to appreciate our beautiful Garden Island that God has so richly blessed us with.

Each month (usually the last Sunday), members of All Saints' Church, friends, and guests/visitors explore together our spectacular island home. The hikes are designed to be family-friendly and are open to everyone including guests/visitors.

The hikes begin after All Saints' 9:30AM service (roughly at 11:45AM unless otherwise indicated). Our starting locations vary based on the hike location. We rate our hikes: Easy, moderate, and strenuous. All hikes feature "regroup" points and are designed to support a wide-range of experience and ability.

Regular updates will be posted to this page regarding meeting locations, trail maps, approximate distance, and level of activity.

A MESSAGE FROM BISHOP ROBERT FITZPATRICK

Picture
Aloha my dear Siblings in Christ Jesus,

I returned from visiting my Grandchildren in Rhode Island late Sunday to the new surge in positive COVID-19 cases here in the Islands. We are again faced with a difficult situation.

There has a been a general relaxation of practices in our congregations over the past couple of months.  The Customary in the time of Pandemic Updated 5 February 2021 is still the “official” word, but we are faced with a new situation. We need to renew our vigilance.

As we consider the current situation, I assume all clergy, lay leaders and church employees who can be vaccinated, have been vaccinated against COVID-19.  I am aware that some individuals have not been vaccinated for medical reasons and that children under 12 are still not eligible to be vaccinated.  Otherwise, I hope all other Episcopalians have been vaccinated, but especially the clergy and lay leaders of the Diocese.  I considerate it imperative that all responsible adults who are able be vaccinated.  So, as the Clergy and lay leaders of this Diocese, please contact me if you have not been vaccinated for a pastoral conversation.

With the variant, we are facing additional concerns.  Even those of us who have been vaccinated are susceptible to the Delta Variant of the Virus, though generally the negative impact is lessened.  Those vaccinated can still share the Virus.  That means we can put children and the vulnerable at risk.  We must again live into our responsibility to care for our neighbors (the Great Commandment: Mark 12:28-31).

Masks should be worn by all during indoor worship (or any small gatherings), and, for now, by all at outdoor worship (with social distancing and plexiglass shields/screens, readers and preachers can still remove their masks).  I know some congregations have slowly introduced congregational singing with masks. I urge you to reconsider that aspect of worship (at the very least, limit it).  I think the same is true of “Aloha Hour” (if there is a short fellowship time after worship, please be sure it is outside with masks and social distancing).  Outdoor worship with social distancing is still ideal.  If indoors, everyone needs to be strict about social distancing and maximize air flow.

Keep in mind, even though most – if not all – parishioners have been vaccinated, we are again protecting the children and the vulnerable. Masks, social distancing, and proper air flow are again a must.

Can the Church require vaccinations of Clergy and employees?  The Chancellor is considering guidelines, but generally the answer is “yes.”  The Bishop can require vaccinations of eligible Clergy who engage in direct sacerdotal ministry.  The Bishop can make it a requirement for eligible lay employees of the Episcopal Church in Hawaiʻi and Organized Missions.  Vestries can make it a condition for eligible lay employees in Parishes.  Again, there may be medical reasons clergy and lay employees cannot be vaccinated. This is a pastoral situation.  I would rather know directly and privately if an eligible member of the Clergy or lay leader (Warden, member of a Vestry/Bishop’s Committee, Diocesan Council member, or Standing Committee member) has not yet been vaccinated.

Can vaccinations be required of volunteers?  Yes, as a volunteer, a person’s involvement can be limited to include reasonable requirements to keep others (and the individual) safe.  That can include vaccinations if there is direct contact with an at-risk population.  A person does not have to be a volunteer or be accepted to fulfill a volunteer ministry.  Volunteers are not employees.

Should churches suspend worship right now?  At this time, I think churches can provide the needed safeguards with masks, social distancing, and air flow (ideally outdoors). I recognize that can change.  I trust the “Clergy-in-Charge” (Rector, Vicar, Interim, Priest-in-Charge, etc.) or the Senior/Bishop’s Warden in congregations without a current “Clergy-in-Charge” to make such a call, but, generally, I think we are learning to deal with COVID-19 as best we can.  Let me know if you decide to suspend worship and your criteria in making the decision as it relates to your local community.

As God’s Church, we have learned how to adapt in this pandemic, and the current surge is one more bump on the way to the “new” normal.  Again, please encourage everyone who is able and eligible to be vaccinated.

Please contact me with any questions.

Almighty God, in Christ you make all things new: transform the poverty of our nature by the riches of your grace, and in the renewal of our lives make known your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen
Your Brother in Christ Jesus,
Bob

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRIEST [UPDATED: 3/22/21]

A MESSAGE FROM KAHU KAWIKA

"Well, here we are at the halfway point in our Lenten Season, which we mark in church today with the rose-colored lectern frontal (we do a similar thing in the four weeks of the Advent Season, when midway through we highlight Rose Sunday). These midpoints in our holy seasons are invitations for us to stop for a moment, catch a breath from our normal flow of seasonal observance, and make sure we take the time and effort to be more reflective and purposeful in our walk with God and in our spiritual practices."

The past year has been a very challenging time for all of us. As we make our way through the disruption and turmoil, we will be confronted with questions about how we want to rebuild our lives anew. As Christians, we know that we do not face the future alone or ill-equipped. Jesus promises always to be with us and has gifted the community with the power of the Spirit as a guide, advocate and comforter.

This Lent, I would like to invite you to participate in a six-week small group process called Revive Lent, published by Forward Movement (who also produce the daily devotional guide “Forward Day by Day”). Revive Lent will provide an opportunity to become grounded in foundational spiritual practices that will equip you for a deeper spiritual journey. In this time of uncertainty, Revive Lent helps us to talk with one another, build a deeper relationship with God and prepare to journey with Jesus through Holy Week.

Revive Lent comprises 6 sessions:

March 23, Session 5: Praying through the hurt
March 30, Session 6: Death and dying, and praying with Jesus in the garden

Our sessions will be via Zoom on Tuesdays 5:00PM - 6:00PM, starting on February 23rd and concluding on March 30th. In order to enroll, please either speak with me directly, call the church office, or email me at rector@allsaintskauai.org. I will then send you the Zoom link you will need for each of our sessions.

May God richly bless us as we grow in faith to serve God’s world,

Kahu Kawika+
