All Saints' has a rich tradition of providing outreach ministries for those in need. Our newest ministry under development is to have durable medical equipment available for loan to the community. We hope to have shower chairs, walkers, wheelchairs, crutches, etc. to loan for a small deposit, partially refundable upon the return of the equipment.
Bruce at Gammie Home Care has been a wealth of information on cleaning processes and supply sources for our equipment. Gammie and Kauai Hospice have both said they would be willing to direct possible donations of equipment to our ministry. Several members of our All Saints' Ohana have also offered to donate equipment. Anyone interested in being a volunteer with the Medical Equipment Loan Ministry is invited to an organizational meeting on Monday, September 19 at 6:30PM at All Saints'. The meeting agenda will include discussing the acceptance of donations, loan and care of equipment, and roles and responsibilities of volunteers. If you would like more information, please email the Medical Equipment Loan Ministry at [email protected] or speak to CeCe Caldwell. Janis Wright and Nora Takenouchi are looking for a few volunteers to help maintain the King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma Peace Garden which is located just inside the south (Lihue side) entrance to the church campus. The garden was dedicated to King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma as part of our annual celebration of the Holy Sovereigns in 2013. Janis and Nora have taken on the task of organizing and tidying up the garden in preparation for the next Holy Sovereigns service on Sunday, October 9th. They will be working on the garden from 8:00AM until 11:00AM the next three Mondays (9/19, 9/26 & 10/3). Looking to the future, the plan is to maintain the garden with a regularly scheduled "garden day" once per month. If you would like to help with this project please talk with either Janis or Nora. A green thumb is not required! Mahalo nui loa to Janis and Nora for taking the lead on this important project. Recently, All Saints' was given 40 table top Christmas trees, including lights and ornaments. The goal is to decorate and sell the trees during the upcoming October and November Saturday Markets and the Christmas Craft Fair in December. The proceeds from the Christmas tree sales will support the Outreach Ministries of the Church. Since the trees are currently undecorated, All Saints' is looking for a group of volunteers to decorate the trees. The All Saints' 'Ohana and friends are invited to a "Christmas Tree Decorating Party" on Saturday, October 1st, 4:00PM - 6:00PM in the All Saints' Gym. The gym will be decked out with the sights and sounds of the holiday season for this festive event. In addition, there will be food, drinks and lots of holly, jolly, fun. This is a perfect family friendly event. Please bring your family and friends to decorate the trees. P.S. For those who "object" to Christmas music, decorations, and holiday cheer before Thanksgiving, we ask for your forgiveness and invite you to embrace the Holiday Spirit for two hours in October for a very worthy cause. A RSVP is kindly requested in order to plan for the food and drinks. by Sierra Gore, Ministry Intern Teenage years are a time of massive growth and discovery of passions, hopes and goals, and sense of self. In school, teens are preparing to either go into the work field or continue education while juggling sports and clubs, family and friends, social lives, and then we hope they show up in church as well. With all the obligations pulling our teens in different directions we sometimes neglect the spiritual needs of our youth because we think they're already overwhelmed or simply not interested. Youth formation offers the chance to invest in a young person's spiritual and emotional self in ways not touched on in an academic or social context. Education in schools differs from education in church in many key ways, not the least of these being an overt call to honor the person's inner divinity and sacred whole being. We remind ourselves that Jesus Christ dwells in each of us and we celebrate it through service and prayer. We gather together to share meals, laugh, enjoy Creation, and just be as beloved people of God. And we pray, we pray, we pray. We pray when we come together and when we part, we pray when we eat, when we travel together, and when we feel so moved. We learn methods of prayers and offering gratitude and that God is always with us, listening. We do all this without the certainty of knowing all the answers. Formation molds us by both teaching and allowing space for questions, doubt, and conversation. Formation calls us to serve and see Christ in others. Formation grants us opportunities to find and create fellowship. Youth formation in particular offers tools to create compassionate and curious young people of faith. The theology and faith practices that they are exposed to now guides and shapes the spiritual path that they will follow for many years. Setting up healthy avenues of exploration and discovery sets strong foundations and habits that can be lived into for more than the sake of tradition. It fosters experiences that bring and keep young people in our churches and in relationship with Jesus, not because of expectations, but because it nourishes them. I was deeply involved in youth ministry throughout middle and high school and carved the person I am today. It offered me a chance to think critically outside of school and still get to be silly. It cultivated young leaders from my peers and myself through depending on us to lead events and retreats. It showed me that family was larger than blood and adults cared for and respected me and my opinions. It encouraged me to learn more about my faith's traditions and empowered me to get more involved in my church. It taught me to be kind and compassionate and it challenged me to live into a Christian life. I am inspired and passionate about bringing these kinds of transformational experiences to our youth at All Saints'. We can do this in several ways. Let's begin by modeling our own formation and spiritual journey by engaging in multigenerational dialogue. Ask young people questions about their life and their relationship with Jesus and listen! It is vital that we allow space for our youth to grow as people of faith while offering a backdrop for healthy faith. The most important task for aiding youth and their formation is to pray for them. Pray for their involvement in school and extracurricular activities, pray for their friends and interactions with the world, and pray for their discernment. Those of us who have made it out of the murky waters that are our teenage years know that everything will turn out okay, but that clarity may be difficult when in the throngs of middle and high school. When we show up in prayer or in person we are reminding ourselves and our youth that we care for a cherish them as full members of the Body of Christ and welcome them with open arms. Aloha All Saints' 'Ohana, We have been watching very carefully Hurricane Lester's potential path. The good news for Kauai and the other islands is that the storm continues to track north-hopefully the Hawaiian Islands have been spared a direct hit. However, forecasts still have Kauai potentially receiving large amounts of rain and significant winds this weekend. The Central Hurricane Center writes, "Although the forecast track currently keeps the strongest winds and heaviest rains offshore, the local weather will be highly dependent on the exact track that Lester takes as it passes by. Only a small error on the left side of the forecast track would bring a significantly higher threat of damaging winds and flooding rains to the islands." Yesterday, we polled the 'Ohana Retreat participants and many expressed reservations about the impact of rain and high winds on the overall retreat experience. Also, some participants had concerns about being isolated in a remote area of the island without communications as the storm passes the island. If it does storm significantly, the retreat group will be confined to a small indoor area all weekend. We want the retreat to be a fun and memorable experience--an indoor retreat at Camp Sloggett is not very appealing. Given the expected stormy conditions and the continued threat of a hurricane, and based on the feedback participants shared, we feel it is in the best interest to POSTPONE this weekend's 'Ohana Retreat. As long as Kauai is not under a "hurricane warning" Sunday morning, All Saints' will then offer two very simple said Eucharist services on Sunday at 7:00AM and 9:30AM. There will be no music and a very brief homily. If you elect to attend Church on Sunday, please stay tuned to local news for weather and local road conditions before traveling into Kapaa on Sunday. Please check Sunday morning the All Saints' website to confirm services will be held. We pray for everyone who might be impacted by the storm. We pray especially for first responders who will be risking their safety for the well being and safety of others. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. Mahalo nui loa. In Christ, ryan+ |
