This article appeared in the January 7, 2016 issue of the "The Epistle". On Sunday, January 3, The Right Reverend Richard Chang, fourth Bishop of Hawaii (retired), and his wife, Dee, joined us for worship. Bishop Chang preached and celebrated both services. Bishop Chang is not a stranger to Kauai, nor to All Saints'. In 1970, he was made Archdeacon for the Island of Kauai, a post he held until 1974. From 1970-79, he was the Rector of All Saints'. He also served as priest-in-charge of Christ Memorial Church, Kilauea, and St. Thomas' Church, Hanalei, from 1973-1979. "They were thrilled to be back on Kauai," said Marge Akana. "It brought back many good memories for them and I was amazed at how many names they both remembered." Bishop Chang's sermon continued the All Saints' Christmas message of "Christmas is not over!" He reminded the congregation, like the wise men, all of us take risks in our daily lives. Even the simple act of giving and receiving a gift involves risk-taking. He challenged the congregation to reflect upon our readiness to accept the unexpected gift of Jesus--both His love and His light. Can we show to others how we feel about our acceptance of that gift by spreading the Gospel to those around us? Can they see His love and light in us? How are we expressing the Gospel through service and caring for others? In 2016, Bishop Chang celebrates his fiftieth year of ordained ministry. He was ordained a deacon on March 5, 1966 and was ordained a priest on September 4, 1966. 2016 also begins the 20th year of Bishop Chang's consecration as the fourth Bishop of Hawaii. Mahalo to Bishop Chang for being with us and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ! Congratulations on 50 years of ordained ministry! Comments are closed.
